18th October 2010
Just over a week since he returned from his final training expedition on Cho Oyu, Richard Parks completed the Cardiff half marathon yesterday.
He ran the 13.1 mile course in 1 hour 49 minutes alongside friends amongst the 15,000 people who took part in the half marathon in the welsh capital.
“It was a great event, I did it because a lot of my friends were running in it and just to add on a bit of extra training to my normal routine” Richard stated.
He added; “My goal was under 2 hours, I was never going to set a PB time for myself as my body is still in recovery from the Himalayas so I didn’t want to over exert myself too much but I was pretty happy with my time”.
This Sunday will also see Richard competing in a special event for further training. Cardiff Burn is a new multi sport event organised by Multisport Wales and will see Richard compete in a 10k run, 35k bike and 3k kayak.
Richard already cycles and runs around 150 miles a week as part of his training for the 737 Challenge and he is thrilled to be taking part in this weekend’s event, he stated; “It’s going to be pretty awesome, I am really looking forward to Cardiff Burn. It’s the first multi-disciplined event that I have done. I am doing a lot of cycling and running but the one element of kayaking I haven’t done a lot, although I have had the opportunity to get out on the Taff already thanks to Multisport Wales so it should be really good fun. It’s going to be pretty cool kayaking in the bay”.
The Burn will also give Richard the opportunity to put his new bike through it’s paces; “I am looking forward to using my new Giant Anthem X2 which Giant supplied me for training, it’s pretty awesome” said Richard.
He finally added; “The longer multi sport event is more relative to mountaineering because of the different muscle groups I am using all the time, so the event is the perfect training for me, I can’t wait”.
