Richard finishes First Nation Home for Sport Relief
19th March 2012
Saturday not only saw Wales win the Grand Slam but it also saw Team Wales complete the DHL First Nation Home for Sport Relief. Richard and his teammates of Welsh sports stars and celebrities completed their 1,000 mile race around the UK for Sport Relief.
Richard joined captain and TV presenter Gethin Jones, Welsh rugby legend Gareth Thomas, ITV Wales presenter Fran Donovan, former Welsh Rugby Union international Dafydd James, professional mountain biker and endurance specialist Matthew Page, Welsh nature observer and television presenter Iolo Williams and former Welsh & Olympic 400m hurdler Matt Elias in a gruelling race around the UK cycling, running, rowing and sailing to become the First Nation Home.
They were competing against the likes of Josh Lewsey and Chris Broadman on the England Team, Craig Doyle and Sonia O’Sullivan for Team Ireland, and Kenny Logan and Greame Obree were just two of the names battling for Team Scotland.
Those that have been following Richard on Twitter will have seen the highs and lows of the week already but below are some photo highlights of the week, which saw Team Wales battle through blisters, fatigue and plenty of hours in the saddle whilst also visiting schools and projects to raise the awareness of how Sport Relief helps people in the UK.
The team arrived at the finish at Cardiff Castle on Saturday relieved, exhausted and thrilled that they made it home just in time for Wales v France at the Millennium Stadium where they were welcomed back by thousands on the pitch before Wales completed their Grand Slam.
A tired but proud Richard stated; “It was an honour to be asked to be part of Team Wales in this years DHL First Nation Home which is supporting Sport Relief. I always knew that the week was going be tough racing the other home nations over 1,000 miles around the UK but being part of a team was awesome. Everyone really put it in and worked incredibly hard and I was lucky to have not only fantastic teammates but also a brilliant support crew. We all got on really well, had an amazing time and it was a privilege to be able to support a great cause to help people less fortunate and have a great time in the process”.
He added; “I am looking forward to this Sunday when we find out which nation has won after the public join in for the final part of the race and run for their nation themselves in the RanSlam”.
